- Folks, I for one have a very valid, and honest reason for wanting to unpack a game's PAK file. The game is quite new and they provide no keyboard re-mapping functionality yet. However I know that putting a re-map entry into my own local Input.ini file will solve the problem temporarily until they provide this capability in later versions.
Starbound is available now via Steam, Humble and GOG! The Steam version requires access to a Steam account to install and update Starbound, but GOG and Humble both have direct download versions of the game available.

Ahh oh no! Please read through the following before contacting us for support. Several common issues are described here, but if after reading through the information below your issue is still not resolved, then please post on our support forums or email us if you feel that would be more appropriate!
How to report a bug/crashWhen reporting bugs to us, following a few simple rules can help make bugs much easier to identify and fix!
- See if you can trigger the bug again by repeating what you did.
- (Forums only) Submit each bug in its own thread. Only reply to an existing thread if you are absolutely certain that you have the same bug.
- Give your email/thread a descriptive and specific title. 'Crash' is not specific, whereas (for example) 'Game crashes when the load game menu opens' is.
- Include as much relevant information in the body of your post as you can (see below).
What to include in your report
When reporting bugs to us, including a few bits of extra information can help a lot. Try to include:
- What happened? Did the game crash, freeze / lock up, or just do something wrong (e.g. monster dropped unexpected item)? What did you expect to happen here?
- What were you doing in the game at the time? (e.g. killing a Poptop, accepting a quest from a colonist)
- Whether you were able to trigger the bug again by repeating what you did.
- Your operating system name and version.
- Are you using any mods? If so, which ones?
- Whether you're in full screen or windowed mode.
- If the game crashed, attach your error logs (see below)!
- Windows – Steam/SteamApps/common/Starbound/storage/starbound.log
- Mac – /Users/USER/Library/Application Support/Steam/*/Starbound.app/Contents/MacOS/starbound/storage/
- Linux – ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/Starbound/storage/starbound.log
Please attach that file to your email along with any other information that may help us (like your computer's specs, what you were doing at the time, etc).
The game won't launch!- API-MS-WIN-CRT-RUNTIME-L1-1-0.DLL is missing! – Your PC may have failed to install Visual C++ 2015. You can download it here! If you're unable to install it, please ensure that you've installed the latest service packsfor your version of Windows.
- ‘OpenGL 2.0 is not available!' – Please try updating your graphics drivers! Here's a guide.
- JSON Errors – If you're using mods, that's almost certainly why! Your mods may have unresolved bugs or may simply be out of date. You will need to contact the mod author as the author is responsible for the tech support of the issue. If you have tons of mods installed, you will need to remove all of them and install them one at a time and find out which mod is causing the error.
- Mac OS X 'The application has quit unexpectedly'
- The most common reason OS X users see this message is because they are running a version of OS X below 10.9. Upgrading to 10.9 or above resolves this issue for most users. Information on how to upgrade to the latest version of OS X for free.
- If you are running OS X 10.9 or higher, try disabling the Steam overlay.

Other Troubleshooting Tips- Disable the Steam Overlay
- Click the 'Settings' button in your Steam window, then click on 'In-Game Settings'.
- Uncheck the box next to 'Enable Steam Community In-Game' and click OK.
- Disable the Steam Overlay on specific games only by right-clicking on the game title, click on 'Properties' and uncheck 'Enable Steam Community In-Game' in the 'General' tab.
Get the Mods
Non-workshop mods are installed the exact same way on the server as on your computer; just use the File Manager to access the server's mods
folder.The easiest way to get Steam Workshop mods is described below, and starts with subscribing to the mods in Steam Workshop, and letting steam download them automatically to the client on your local computer.
Subscribing to the Mods
Navigate to the workshop for Starbound on Steam, find the mods you're interested in and click on them to open up their workshop page. Then click the green '+ Subscribe' button. It's that simple!
When it's subscribed to, the button changes to say 'Subscribed' with a checkmark, and steam has begin to automatically download the mods in the background to the local computer files. For a large number of mods, you might have to wait a little while for steam to finish downloading them all.
Preparing the Mods for Upload to the Server
To find where steam stores the mods it just downloaded, please do the following:
- Right-click on 'Starbound' in your game library, and the menu shown below will pop up. Click on 'properties' at the bottom.
On the next pop-up window, click on the 'Local Files' tab across the top, and then on 'Browse Local Files'.
You will see this view of the game files on your local computer, as shown below. To get to where steam hides the mods, click on the arrow in the upper left to move up one level, which is circled in the screenshot.
In the screenshot below, you will also see a 'mods' folder. That is NOT where steam put the workshop mods that it downloads automatically. The 'mods' folder is where you manually add your own mods, and after a fresh install this folder is usually empty .
In the next level up, you will see a list of all the Steam games installed, and you will click that same arrow one more time to go up another level. Then you should see this…
The Workshop
folder is where Steam stores all the content that it downloads for all games. Click on the folder to open it.

are folders with numbers on them. Those are the master ID numbers of Steam games.
The ID number for Starbound is 211820
, so click on that folder. Inside there, you will see a folder for every mod that you subscribed to. The names of the folders are the Steam workshop ID for that mod. Inside each folder is a file called 'contents.pak'.
Leave the mods in those numbered folders. Upload all the numbered folders for the mods you want to use to the server.
Upload the Mod Folders to the Server
We highly recommend using a program to package and compress the folders, such as a program that does .zip
or .rar
formats. This will make a single file that is often smaller then all the separate folders were (and smaller means faster upload).
Then upload that zip file to the server, to the folder /mods
. You can use drag and drop in the file manager, or an actual FTP program to move the file. Lastly, unpackage the files.
We have support for unzipping file directly in the file manager view. Just select a single zip format file, and an 'Unzip' button will appear along the top of the file manager window. A similar button for .rar
format will appear if you select a .rar
file.
Use Nodecraft's Panel to Rename Files
The last step before the server can actually use the mods, is the file inside every numbered folder needs to be moved out of that folder and directly into the /mods
folder. The server will not load any files inside other folders inside /mods
. The problem with that is, they're all named the same exact name:content.pak
.

In the Nodecraft file manager, this will cause them to overwrite each other when you start moving them (move 20 files with the same name, and when you finish, there's only 1 there. The usual method is to rename them to the workshop ID number (the number that the mod folders are named).
If you have a lot of mods, this will take a while, and it's kind of tedious. So, at Nodecraft, we have a magic button that does it all for you. Seriously, magic button.
After uploading the mod folders, go to the 'Mods (wip)' tab of the control panel, and click on the blue button labelled 'Steam Workshop Fix'. This will:
- take the
content.pak
file out of every numbered mod folder. - automatically re-name it to the workshop ID number.
- then move them directly into the
/mods
folder. - When it finishes, the numbered mod folders that were uploaded should be empty, and they can be deleted later on if you want.
So, click button. Boom, done. Time to play.
This only works if you left the mod folders exactly as they were, inside the numbered mod folders.
If you don't have a magic button that does this for you (ie, you're trying to set up your own server at home), then all the content.pak
files needs to be renamed and moved manually. We highly suggest you use the Workshop ID numbers so you can tell what is what later on.

Please restart the server, and it should automatically load every mod in the /mods
folder. If there are any issues with a mod loading at startup, the 'Console' tab of the server will usually contain any error messages related to that.
